Submission Guidelines and Process

Mosaic publishes essays that engage the interdisciplinary study of literature and/or literary-critical theory.

Essays must represent innovative thought (either in the form of extending or challenging current critical positions). Focus can be on literary works or issues related to any historical period, national culture, ethnic group, genre, or media. Essays may be mainly theory-oriented or may conjoin theorizing with practical application or examination of specific texts.

Any interdisciplinary critical approach or methodology may be employed.

Essays must be thoroughly researched and make concrete reference to recent scholarship in the given area.

Mosaic does not publish fiction or poetry.

Essays may be in English or French and may feature illustrations. If an essay is accepted for publication, securing artwork and permissions for illustrations is the sole responsibility of the author. At time of submission, however, simply attach suggested illustrations.

Please note: Mosaic publishes only original work. We will not consider essays that are part of a thesis or dissertation, have been published previously, or are being considered for publication in another journal or medium.

Mosaic’s anonymous peer-review process requires that no identifying information appear on the electronic version of the essay itself. Please remove any such information before submitting.

Length and Documentation

Essays should be roughly 7,000 words, to a maximum of 7,500 words (word count includes Works Cited, notes, and abstract).

Parenthetical citations and Works Cited must follow the conventions of the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing.

For more information about style and structure, see our Author Guidelines for Style and Structure.

Evaluation Process

Submissions that meet our requirements are sent to specialists in the specific and general area that an essay addresses. Reviewers are used not merely to assess the quality of the submission but also to provide constructive feedback. Anonymous but complete transcripts of the readers’ reports are sent to the author.

If an essay is conditionally accepted for publication, subject to revision, the manuscript revision must be completed, and the essay returned to Mosaic, within one calendar year.
